Beautiful tribute, thank you. I only got to work with Howell once. He had no reason to have to interact with me, but searched me out during tech and previews to tell me he thought me and my team were doing beautiful work. Such a simple and meaningful gesture that will inspire me for the rest of my career. I will be a better artist, a better collaborator, and a better person for my very brief encounter with him. Grateful for that, and grateful to get to know his artistry more through this tribute.

What a lovely tribute to my friend Howell. We started out together in NYC many years ago at The Acting Company. He stole my heart with his smile. Good times and good memories. I am so very proud of him for all the great work he did in the theater. And most of all, he was a really good guy. Remembering him with much love. He will be greatly missed.

Howell and I had RJR and ECU Drama Dept in common.. I loved speaking to him about what new show he was designing ... I got to see several of his shows .. he was a true pro and all around great guy !! Broadway will not be the same without him.. will always think of him when there ....

My big sister, Karen Alkofer started with Hal at ECU and was his roommate in Saratoga with The Acting Co. It is because of her relationship with Bink and ECU that I concentrated in lighting design with my fine arts degree. I use the principals in my work as a Set Decorator. Bink was very kind to me during my time of need at Karen's passing 20 months ago. My heart and my families heart goes out to you. He changed my family in all the good ways.

Sending so much love to you Howell! What an extraordinary human being you were in this world, it was an honor to call you friend.

I have know Howell since he was a child in Winston-Salem. Howell's brother John and I put together his first drum set for christmas on christmas eve. He was such a talented individual, great person who loved all. His time on this earth was way to short and will surely be missed.

Two years on tour with Hal in early 80's for The Acting Company. He on the truck. I on the bus. All across America. Such impeccable professionalism. And such kindness, to everyone, especially the actors. A friend, and a guardian angel. It could get pretty sketchy out there in some corners of the country. He, and Jeff Turner, always looked after us. And then to be with him again behind the table, with Bentley, at Shakespeare Theatre, DC. He, Lighting Designer! Thank you for this remembrance of a lovely man.

Watching Howell's work at the Shakespeare Theatre helped me understand that lighting design was my thing. Working with him helped me understand that you could be a nice guy and a talented artist at the same time. I'll miss him very much.

You are beyond talented. You bring so much to life. I got to see In the Heights as my first Broadway play and I get to love Hamilton on Disney plus. I get to appreciate your work over and over because it is truly phenomenal! THANK YOU!

Gone to soon! Bink and I go back to JR High. He was my friend my brother. To see the love of family he has all over the world, brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. He was that kind of person. He never met a stranger. Zoe, your dad loved you so much. There are stories I would love to share with you.
Joyce, I love you with all my heart. Thank you for giving us more time to spend w/Bink. I'll miss that silly grin, his persona, his whit, and his love. Gone to soon bro!!

Oh, Bink. I'm gonna miss you...
I was blessed to meet him early in the Parsons days. What do I remember from then? Breathtaking cycloramas, changing even without your realizing until - BAM - the entire mood was different. And side lights. And Envelope. I remember him laughing over the fits Liz Koeppen's screamingly white hair would give him ... and how that comment opened my eyes to just how intensely he saw and felt the lighting of a show.
I saw a lot of dance then and I remember so distinctly seeing Garth Fagan and thinking, "Sheesh, these guys need Howell Binkley. Dancers and choreography every bit as good as Parsons but NO art in the light or the setting!"
Years later, we were talking and he said, "Doug, you gotta see this show Kiss of the Spiderwoman" and when I showed up on the appointed night there wasn't a ticket for me; there was a seat next to him in the booth! How great was that?!

Great tribute! Hearing all the music that got stuck in my head over and over during tech and previews for 13 years brought it all back!

Thank you all for sharing this tribute to our friend, Howell.
That is how I will always remember him, as a friend.

I was excited to see 2 of my photographs in the tribute from 1974 when Howell (Hal then) went on a 2 week tour with the Provincial Moravian Youth Choir... Dayspring. He was one of the actors in our production of "Celebrate Life" Thank you so much..

It felt like a great privilege to have the opportunity to work with Howell-then to work with him more than once was to see his generous spirit-to witness him give opportunities to young professionals. I met Hal in the summer of 1987 when I was a production intern at Jacob's Pillow and he and David were starting Parsons Dance. He was demanding with the crew, expecting his exacting standards to be met, but he always made everyone feel like they were on the same team-- his team. For the 10 years following when I was on the production staff, it was always a treat when he would light one of the shows. We'd tell the interns that "the best guy" would be coming through and they'd have a chance to work with Hal. Our paths crossed a few times over the years, and I enjoyed being a Facebook friend with such a renowned artist. My husband, Marc Warren, and Hal shared a birthday, and they always exchanged good wishes. I have to share that for some of the time when I knew Hal, he wasn't really at his best- he had his struggles back in the day. And that, in particular, is why I truly, truly appreciate the amazing success he made of his life- not for the awards, not even for the art, but for the impact he had of the hundreds, thousands of people whose lives he touched. His Second Act was the triumphant finish! It was evident in this wonderful tribute how much Howell meant to so many people. I was so touched. Thank you to all who made this and who shared their remembrances. His light will shine forever. Thank you, thank you! Alex

Howell, all light and love!

When I met him, we were able to connect over his hometown and my employer who was then Piedmont Airlines. He had grown up with many of the pilots I worked with. I shared my photographs I had taken on my Atlantic crossings of Greenland- black and white, light and shadow. It was a wonderful moment of connection
